Cornelius Vermuyden School

A map showing cycle and walking routes to and from Cornelius Vermuyden School

Getting to and from Cornelius Vermuyden School

These routes and maps are suggestions of how you could stop taking the car and swap to cycling, walking, or scooting to school. They don’t show every possible route and you could have fun finding a way that works for you. If you know a safe way that gets you there even quicker, that’s great! Take that route instead.

Address

Cornelius Vermuyden School

Dinant Avenue

Canvey Island

Essex

SS8 9QS

Heavy traffic zone

The highlighted heavy traffic zone on the map shows the area that will have the heaviest traffic at school time. By using alternate routes and a mix of walking and cycling, you can avoid sitting in traffic and being late for school.

Walking routes

Cornelius Vermuyden is on the far western side of Canvey Island but still well within easy walking distance. As the school is not on one of the main roads and is in a residential area it’ll often be quicker to walk to school than it is to drive. The walking entrances to the school are alongside the school but clearly differentiated from the car entrance.250 metres away on the busier nearby road is a zebra crossing.

Cycling routes

As with walking, the zebra crossing on Link Road is beneficial for safe cycling access to school. Around the lake in the middle of the Island is an off-road cycling path, which handily joins up with the extensive footpath network approaching the school.

Just across the estuary is Hadleigh Park, which was the site for the 2012 Olympic mountain bike events. This provides the perfect opportunity for practising your cycling skills.

Bus routes

About 250 metres from the school, on Link Road, are stops for the main bus routes taking people around Canvey, as well as on and off the island. There’s seating and shelter at some of the stops.

Train Routes

Benfleet station is just over a mile and a half walk from the school and provides regular trains between Basildon and Southend.
